Library- Shelter
Site: Boston, MA, USA
Everyone has a right to basic shelter; a place that we call home makes us feel content and confident about our lives. Basic shelter gives each of us peace of mind, sense of protection, and a place to dream. There are many public buildings that are vacant at night. Public libraries have a complicated relationship with homeless people who tend to visit and stay in the library during the day as a way to stay safe, but must stay on the streets at night. As most of the homeless shelters are beyond capacity and during cold weather people die of extreme temperatures(especially with a pandemic), the situation worsens. My thesis focuses on providing basic shelter by creating architecture that can transform itself from a public building into a shelter.
The transformative architecture will not only focus on homelessness but anyone and everyone who requires shelter ensuring habitability. It is extremely important to rethink, reuse, and reinvent public buildings to be used for the betterment of the community.
